Database-based centralized project data management
Start the design wherever you wish
In CADS Electric Pro version 17 you can start the design from any point you wish or are able to with the available input data. Start designing from a level drawing, central diagram, circuit diagram, central layout or database, whatever suits you best. Enhance the efficiency in diagram design by reusing previously created projects. For example you can import a bunch of old centre diagrams into the new project, which makes it easy to continue with the design of installation drawings.
Modify information wherever you wish
Centralised data management enables changing the information anywhere you wish. You can change the design data in a installation drawing, centre diagram, circuit diagram, centre layout, database, project tree or Excel. After modifying, the data is updated in all views of the edited objects.
 

Project tree
The new treelike user interface improves the design data handling and lessens the chance of mistakes. CADS Electric's real-time project tree interface lets you handle the project design data centrally. It is a databank by means of which you will find the project data and stay aware of where everything is. The design data and necessary functions are always in the right place “under nose”, with no need to dig them in dialogs or toolbars. All the following are centralised in the project tree:

  • Centres and their groups in the project
  • Positioned devices and their quantities
  • Wiring and connection data
  • Devices
  • Product models
  • Buildings, floors, spaces and area markings

The project tree is also a tool that lets you add design data imported from different applications to other document types. With the help of this you are always in the know whether the data in CADS drawings is already in use. Additionally, it displays the design data not yet in the drawing that can be placed there.

The centralised data handling via the project tree enables easy navigation to any view of desired data. Editing and making changes is faster and simpler than before, since the data is displayed better and all the views are updated after the editing.

Take advantage of the industry's best cable tray features

The new cable conduit functionality of CADS Electric will add dynamism to cable management design. The cable trays can be drawn and edited in various ways both in 2D and 3D views. All the cable trays are drawn and edited with the same tool, so all the cable tray-related options are visible and available for editing at the same time.

Adaptability of cable conduits is especially important in BIM-based design where, among other things, space reservation models can be used in the preliminary design phase. New editing functions allow everything to be edited, for example space reservation models can easily be modified into correct cable trays. Editing has become nothing but joy now.

Prevent problems already in advance with real-time collision checks

Collision checks in real time – no more blind drawing!
Real-time collision checking built into cable trays makes design work more efficient. The real-time collision checks can be made for all desired 3D objects (for example ventilation ducts, lights, etc.). When CADS Electric detects a collision, the designer can react immediately by for example bypassing the object in horizontal direction or changing the height and passing the object in vertical direction. The designer can pick upper and lower height data for ventilation ducts, piping, lighting, etc. directly from the drawing without even having to finish the cable tray drawing.

Revised collision checking

Collision checking that is important in quality assurance has been thoroughly revised. The function checks and flags collisions in a couple of seconds, even in large projects. After this the user can react to collisions by editing the colliding objects. The user can define collision conditions for collision checking: tolerance, inspected elements, consideration of reference drawings, as well as if the entire drawing should be examined or only a user-pointed area. 

Answer the growing needs of developers with boundary functions

Additional data boundary function lets you divide the project's design data into different parts (for example devices, cables, centres) and create lists based on those definitions. Definitions allow for grouping of project data in the database and thus assign additional data to the objects within definitions, for example product information matching the IP definition to all centres inside the IP definition. Additional data boundaries can be, among other things, construction phases, procurement packages, service areas and other definitions freely assigned by the user. Video only in finnish.

Height management
Defining the placement height of product models or symbols is more convenient and versatile in CADS Electric version 17. The update makes it easier to define the placement heights in the placement phase. Additionally, the heights can be borrowed from other elements in the drawing (graphic symbols, cable trays, etc.), for example the height of the lower edge of the lighting suspension rail can be borrowed while placing the lighting fixture. This function can also be used to check the heights from reference drawings, for example, or anywhere there are 3D objects (for example ventilation ducts, pipes, beams, etc.).
IFC 2x3 CV 2.0 certification

The CADS Electric includes import and export functions of IFC formatted data models. For the export functions, the CADS Electric is internationally certified according to the IFC 2x3 CV 2.0 standard. Due to the bidirectional IFC data transfer properties, you can, for example, download models of different fields (architecture, structural, HVAC, electricity) into the CADS software and thus create so-called combination models.

Space import grom IFC-file
In the new version 17 there is no need to define spatial objects for example for the Dialux lighting calculation, they can be imported straight from the architect-provided IFC model. Spatial objects also facilitate the overall management of electrical design and internal navigation of the project. All the project spaces and the devices used therein are found hierarchically under the buildings and floors in their own project tree, from which it is easy to find their views in the level drawing. Spaces are also used in the database and they make it easy to define or edit necessary additional data for the devices inside a space. The spatial objects can be used, among other things, in different space-specific lists and bills of quantity.
 
Real time 3D generation
The 3D design is easier than before thanks to the real-time 3D generation. The designer can see immediately if all 3D models are positioned correctly. The 3D model is generated automatically in the placement or editing phase of symbols.
The product model functionality has been expanded

In the new CADS Electric 17 version, it is possible to define the symbols, product data, plate data or additional information occurring in different applications into one complete product model. For example, safety switches, engines, etc. might occur both in the circuit diagram and installation drawing, or the contactor both in the circuit diagram and centre layout. With product models, several different symbols can be used within the same application. You can also define unlimited additional information for the devices of the product model, and automatically transfer all the defined data into lists and data model (BIM).

The project product models can be used also via the project tree. In the project tree you will find easily all the occurrences and the real-time quantities of the product models in the whole project. Through the project tree you can also edit the product models, and due to the centralised data management it is possible to update the occurrences of all devices automatically when necessary.

More positioning opportunities for product models

Due to the new versatile product model functionality all the symbols of the installation drawings’ application can be positioned. This facilitates the management of project-specific product data and allows automatic generation of different position-based device lists.

The project tree has its own tab for positioned devices where all positions of the project devices and their quantities by product groups can be seen in real-time. For example, when designing lighting, the project tree acts also as a “lighting list”. Its context menus also include the most frequently used functions and navigation tools. Wiring packages
There are now extended utility possibilities for wiring packages in the wiring function of CADS Electric 17 version. You can create different wiring packages according to your needs from the 9000 cables of the CADS Electric cable database. You can also add electrical accessories to the wiring package from the CADS Electric product database. The packages are taken into account also in electrotechnical calculations and bills of quantities.
Diversified management of centres and groups

You can create and edit centres and groups in the installation drawing, centre schema, group management and the project tree. Editing the data in one place will update all occurrences of the object in question in the whole project. You can use centre schemas or other project data from old projects as starting material. With the new project tree, you will find all the project centres and groups in one place and you will stay aware of where everything is. The project tree also has the most frequently used functions and navigation tools.

With the help of the database you can also define additional information or product data for the centres. You can utilise also the Excel interface for bulk editing or for simultaneous editing of all central characteristics of the project at a time. In the group management you can arrange groups according to your needs and check that the groups occur both in the centre schema and in the installation drawing. In addition, all electrotechnical calculations are done faster now and without having to open the installation drawings.

Management of drawing label information
In the new 17 version it is possible to fill in and edit drawing label information also in the database. Due to database-based design, the software brings along the well-known and much praised table type view of the drawing label information. This enables bulk filling and editing all of the project’s drawing label information both in CADS Electric database and Excel. There is also a centralised view of the drawing label information of each application in CADS Electric and after the modifications you can update the drawing label information in the drawings automatically.
Management of sheets in the Schemas and Centre Schemas application

CADS Electric schemas applications enables the management of not only header information but also the diagram sheets. Create or delete sheets or rearrange them. For example, you can also bring old schemas into the project and edit the characteristics of the added objects while importing them.

Application on I/O points of PLC and automation system in installation drawings and factory layouts
In CADS Electric 17 version you can start I/O design also from the layout drawings. When creating and inserting the I/O points into the factory layout, you get the quantities of I/O points. You can continue the designing work in the schemas application or in the database. Projects can be planned also the other way around, since the data inserted into the circuit diagram application can be easily used also in the factory layout. Editing the data in one place updates it in the whole project. This way you get more freedom and flexibility to the design process. 
Terminal block generation in the centre layout application
Now the terminal strips can be generated from the project terminal blocks also in the centre layout application. The function also takes into account the defined size information of the product data of the terminal blocks.
